주제 : 21세기 교실에서 셰익스피어의 중요성(인간 본성 이해)과 그의 영어 언어에 대한 기여

 

Using the word Shakespeare in any classroom in the 21st century has become almost as dangerous for teachers as putting balloons in a toaster.

21세기의 어떤 교실에서든 셰익스피어라는 단어를 사용하는 것은 교사들에게 거의 풍선을 토스터에 집어넣는 것만큼이나 위험해졌다.

 

But Shakespearean works are not boring, confusing, long and painful plays.

그러나 셰익스피어의 작품들은 지루하고, 혼란스러우며 길고 고통스러운 희곡들이 아니다.

 

Although they were written 400 years ago, reading them enables us to understand human nature: love, hate, jealousy, ambition, fear, and suspicion.

그것들은 비록 400년 전에 써졌지만 그것들을 읽는 것은 우리로 하여금 사랑, 증오, 질투, 야심, 두려움, 의심과 같은 인간의 본성에 대해 이해하게 해 준다.

 

Moreover, Shakespeare invented over 2,000 words, so we owe much of our own language to his invention.

게다가 셰익스피어는 2천 단어 이상을 만들었기 때문에, 우리는 우리 자신의 언어 중 많은 부분을 그의 창작에 신세지고 있다.

Words like “countless” and “assassination” as well as phrases like “foul play” originated from his brilliant brain and are still used today.

그의 뛰어난 두뇌에서 ‘부정행위’ 같은 어구들뿐 아니라 ‘무수한’, ‘암살’ 같은 단어들도 나왔고 이러한 단어들은 오늘날에도 여전히 사용되고 있다.

As you see, it’s sunny in Australia.

알다시피, 호주는 화창하다.

 

But early explorers found that cold could be a threat.

하지만 초기 탐험가들은 추위가 위협이 될 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었다.

 

Watkin Tench found it extremely chilly in July 1791 when he and William Dawes reached the George’s River, south-west of Sydney.

Watkin Tench(영국 해병장교이자 탐험가)는 William Dawes와 시드니 남서쪽의 George’s 강에 도달했을 때인 1791년 7월에 그곳이 극도로 싸늘하다는 것을 알았다.

 

Even back in Sydney, people complained of cold that night, but the temperature left the two officers in the bush almost dead.

시드니에 돌아와서조차 사람들은 그날 밤 추위를 불평했지만, 그 기온은 (호주의) 미개간지에 있는 두 장교들을 거의 죽음에 이르도록 했다.

 

In central Australia, the temperature can go from 40°C by day to 0°C at night if the sky is clear, so wherever they went, the explorers needed shelter and warmth.

호주 중부에서는, 하늘이 맑으면 기온이 낮에 섭씨 40도에서 밤에 섭씨 0도까지 될 수 있어서, 어디를 가든 탐험가들은 거처와 온기를 필요로 했다.

 

One of their most important tasks was to bring enough blankets and fuel when going for an exploration.

탐험을 갈 때 그들의 가장 중요한 임무 중 하나가 충분한 담요와 연료를 챙겨가는 것이었다.
